Notes

This massive catalogue contains probably a complete list of lantern slides manufactured or sold by Newton at that time. The section on apparatusses in the beginning is illustrated and instructional texts on illuminants and use of lanterns are given, too. In the section on lanterns and devices, carriers, screens, light sources and lanterns are presented (p. 3-86). The list of lantern slides is organised by subject matter and covers pages 87-524; the catalogue starts with standard format slides. Effect slides are listed in the end (p. 482-end). Effect slides are also illustrated probably in order to demonstrate the respective format and its mechanisms. A very unique format is the slide of the 'dancing witches', catalogue page 485.
