The image consists of a sequence of frame stills, but photographed from a published source rather than directly from the film. The caption 'The first topical film' is partly visible at the bottom of the image.
The sequence appears to have been taken from the same viewpoint, and possibly on the same day, as the well-known 'Prince's Derby' film of 3 June 1896, but does not show the same race.
