Unusually for Rowden, this is a photograph of a halftone illustration from a book or periodical. The image is signed 'Chas. Sheldon' at the bottom left corner.
The printed caption below the image reads 'Sir Henry Rawlinson copying the inscriptions on the Rock of Behistun, in Persia. Resting his ladder on the edge of the precipice, he copied the messages withheld from man for 23 centuries, and [...]' [the rest is obscured by the slide mount].
