“New Version by Frank Freeland.

This well-known and popular temperance story has been told in humorous verse, and forms the subjec of an admirable set of 12 slides. While giving a comic turn to the various incidents, these slides press home to its full value the healthy moral of this excellent narrative. Jack's hard lump is of course a bag of gold, which the newly-returned sailor carries for safety in his breast pocket. Passing the house, where he has often previously spent a considerable portion of his hard-earned money, the landlord is surprised to see Jack pass on his way, and asks him if he is not about to enter as usual and celebrate his return with a flowing bowl. But Jack pleads his hard lump as an excuse. The landlord prophesies that if Jack will come into his house and drink sufficient the hard lump will grow less, and perhaps go away altogether, and Jack agrees to this, and at the same time pulls out his bag of sovereigns to the astonishment of the publican and the delight of the onlookers.”
