“(Strictly copyright.) Printed notes with Introduction by Sir Whitworth Wallis, F.S.A., Director of the Gallery.

Extract from the Lecture: 'The Picture Galleries contain representative works of many schools of English painting, including many famous portraits, but its distinguishing features are the remarkable collection of pictures and drawings of the English pre-Raphaelite painters, together with the works of Sir Edward Burne-Jones.

No period of English painting is so admirably represented in Birmingham as that which is known as the English pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, which had an extraordinary influence on English art. The life of the Brotherhood was a short one, but its influence was lasting. Rossetti was the soul of the movement; Millais, its most brilliant exponent, and Holman Hunt the one who remained most faithful to its aims and ideals.'”
