“Mr Peregrine Potts is the doting parent of ten, and to give them a special treat he takes the whole family to Boulogne and back on board the magnificent steamer La Marguerite. The trip, though delightful in its way, is made still more so by the spice of humorous adventure and harmless frolic which characterise this particular voyage. The preparation of holiday garments for the journey is not unattended with laughable incidents. The drive to London Bridge and the embarkation contribute their items to the day's amusement. Off Gravesend a stirring breeze deprives Mr Potts not only of his hat but his wig, and rounding the Nore they find the sea very choppy, which undesirable state of affairs is the cause of much discomfiture to Mrs Potts and the various little Potts. But their sea troubles are eventually overcome, and the gay crowd lands at Boulogne, where their quaint appearance excites the curiosity and amusement of the French populace, while the fierce gendarmes, the pretty fishwives, the bright costumes of the bathers, and other features of this charming French town are sources of delight to the English visitors, so indeed is the new French hat and wig which Mr Potts secures for the home journey. Twelve excellent slides illustrate this novel adventure.”
