The trade of Lancashire is very depressed, and the ruling magistrates meet to consider a remedy. They resolve on making a great big pie. All the cooks in the county are summoned to say what this monster pie shall contain. As it is to be as large as Noah's Ark they conclude that it shall contain everything eatable, so that all tastes may be gratified. Every trade, therefore, contributes something towards its contents. The tradesmen meet to celebrate the revival of trade, the great dish is deposited in a valley, which is roofed and converted into an oven. When the pie is ready, a mine is dug under it and the coal is set on fire. In three months the pie is baked. Two thousand men get on the roof to dig through the crust. The pie-crust breaks, and they fall in and are drowned in the gravy.
