Newton's lantern slide catalogue: section 9 -- art, literature, and miscellaneous (London: Newton & Co., c.1926), 964

“In Preparation -- Incidents and Character Studies from 'David Copperfield.'

The success which has attended the publication of our sets of Slides on some of the works of Charles Dickens has induced us to attempt to secure a further series of pictures illustrating what is perhaps the Author's most famous work -- 'David Copperfield.'

As in the case of the other sets, it is hoped to publish a condensed version of the story suitable for reading with the Slides. We are assured that this new set will be eagerly welcomed.”

c.1930
Supplementary list of lantern slides (London: Newton & Co., c.1930), 63

“By the courtesy of Messrs. Chapman and Hall (the Dickens Publishers) the Slides have been based on the best of the designs by Phiz and Fred Barnard. All the outstanding features of these well-known pictures have been retained, and many new ones added, so as to render the illustrations entirely suitable for screen work. The characters are so vividly portrayed that they seem to step out from the pages of the book.

To attempt to cut down such a novel as 'David Copperfield' to within the compass of an hour or two's reading can only be undertaken with a humbleness of spirit, but it has been done in the hope that those who shall hear it in its shortened form may catch something of the spirit of Dickens, and of the true beauty of the book, and learn to know it for themselves.”
