“After a considerable amount of experiment, Messrs. Newton & Co. have arranged a very successful system of showing slides stereoscopically with any ordinary Biunial or other dissolving lanterns. The details of the pictures stand out with wonderful stereoscopic effect, and the system is so simple that a few pictures can be shown in this way at any moment during an exhibition mainly composed of ordinary slides without in any way disturbing the arrangements of the lantern. A few stereoscopic pictures introduced occasionally during a scientific lecture would be exceedingly effective, and would greatly interest an audience.

One picture is to be put in each Lantern and focussed on the screen, the pictures should be registered on the screen as near as possible and then viewed through the spectacles, which must be held in the right hand.

On looking at the screen through the spectacles the various objects in the picture all stand out in strong stereoscopic relief, giving a most marvellous appearance of distance and reality to the scene.

No alteration whatever need be made in the Lantern, and the slides will fit any ordinary carriers.

The pictures should not be shown more than eight feet in diameter with limelight.

Stereoscopic projection either with electric arc light or lime-light makes a most attractive side show at a conversazione or bazaar, and a very inexpensive one, as any ordinary Biunial lantern can be used.

The effect is obtained by using an ordinary pair of glass stereoscopic pictures, showing one in each lantern, one through a green and the other through a red glass. These colours are very carefully selected, so that the green cuts practically all the red light out of the spectrum, and the red in the same way cuts out the green.

There are thus two pictures on the screen, one red and one green, and when the observer looks through a pair of spectacles having one glass green and the other red he sees one picture only with each eye. With the right eye he sees only the right-hand picture, and with the other only the left-hand picture, and these being superposed on the screen give the usual effects of stereoscopic vision.
