“Joan Macpherson was a simple Highland country girl, quite contented with her lot, until her cousin, Helen Lovett, came to stay with her parents on a visit from London. The city girl, with her sneers at Joan's quiet country life, creates a desire in the Highland girl's heart to see something of life in London. Her parents, against their will, allow her to return with their cousin to the great city, where Joan finds herself quite out of her element. Her cousin's showily dressed friends laugh at her, and Helen herself joins in making fun of her. Finally overhearing a conversation in which Helen says she is sick and ashamed of her cousin, Joan writes to her father to fetch her away, and returns home quite contented with her own quiet life.”
