“A delightful story of a simple but very upright and honest boy. Particularly suitable for lads, but would instruct and be enjoyed by any audience.
”“A beautiful and very touching story which never loses its interest from start to finish. 'J. Cole' was a small boy who applied for and secured the position of page in a lady's house, and by his quaint sayings, transparent sincerity and eager desire to please, gained the affection of everybody. His droll mistakes provoke our laughter, but it is laughter very near to tears. When burglars break in and are discovered and J. Cole is found to have disappeared, one hardly wonders that his mistress does not lose faith in him. But appearances were strongly against him, and it is with a sense of relief that we read of the poor boy being found in an unused cellar -- gagged and bound and apparently dead. But skilful doctoring and nursing bring him back to life and the story ends happily after all.
