“The recent weighty declarations of the Marquis of Ripon and Sir Edward Grey, as well as those of Lord Lansdowne and other prominent statesmen, on this subject, are sufficient evidence of the growing importance of this 'Congo Question,' of which the public knows so little.
Most people are aware, however, that horrible atrocities have been and are being committed in the Congo 'Free' State, and the report of King Leopold's own Commission places the facts beyond dispute, and fixes the responsibility upon the sovereign and his officials, who are exploiting the country for their own profit.
The Lecture which has been prepared describes the course of events most clearly; and the striking and startling photographs, from negatives taken by Mrs Harris, provide indisputable proof that the facts have not been exaggerated.
No more sensational Lantern Lecutre has ever been issued; and to make public use of the slides is to emphasise and strengthen a protest which, in the words of the Archbishop of Canterbury, 'is raised for wrongs which the whole world has felt to be intolerable.'
It is estimated that 3,000,000 human beings have perished from the system obtaining in the Congo Basin during the last 14 years.”
