“A young girl in the springtime of life feels that a shadow hangs before her -- the veil the future hangs before us -- and wishes that it could be removed, so that she might see all that was to happen to herself in the years to come. She was advised to rest content, to be wise, and not ask to see what is better left unseen. She persisted, however, and the curtain is rolled away, and she is shown the varying enisodes that go to form her future life. Through love to wedlock, motherhood, till she is a widow, and then a grandmother. Scene after scene rises before her till she is fain to cry 'enough,' but they go on until she sees herself in the tomb. She asks what has become of her brothers and sisters, as she has not seen them, and is shown the churchyard where they all lie. But the end of life is not the tomb, and she asks for just one more picture, and is rewarded with a glimpse of Heaven. The piece is in verse, expressively written, and describes well what might be if our lives were all known to us.
