Newton & Co., England
in stock of Newton & Co., 1888-1912 (item ref. QI / 8QI)
creator of source image(s): MURRAY, C.O. (1842-1923)
‘Old Prickles’ in Merry elves (1874)
contained in Hedgehogs (lecture: Newton & Co., 30 slides, in/before 1937)
possibly same as Old Prickles (story: Henry W. Taunt, 6 slides, in/before 1889)
see generic title Old Prickles (generic set title – 3 different versions are known)
possibly same as Old Prickles: or, how the hedgehog won back his supper (story: manufacturer unknown, 6 slides, in/before 1889)
The 1899 Newton slide catalogue lists slides 1-6 and uses the telegraphic code 'QI'. The 1909 and 1913 catalogues add an 'Introductory Slide' [i.e. a set title] numbered 0, and use the code '8QI'.
The change of code may simply be to distinguish the 7-slide version from the original, or may indicate two different versions of the set (e.g. adoption of another maker's version as Newton's principal stock item).
