Slide set: The bronze statue (recitation: Bamforth & Co., 21 slides, 1894)

Descriptive data for this set (listed below slide images)
Slide 1
'Tis a statue of bronze, or what seemeth such / A horse and rider in armour clad
Slide 2
But there's many a slip 'twixt cup and lip / A storm burst over the homeward ship
Slide 3
And raised on his tomb this statue grim / Still keeping watch and ward for him
Slide 4
They vowed, when free from the nursery laws / They would try the legend and prove its cause
Slide 5
On Christmas Eve, awake at times / They listened for the midnight chimes

Slide 7
Through the gloomy house the maiden crept / Half fearful of rousing those who slept
Slide 8
Unheard she reaches the door at last / Undid the bolts in trembling haste
Slide 9
But how may she stand when she leaves the street / The gusts on the open shore to meet
Slide 10
Then just as came the shore in sight / Out shone the moonbeams, sharp and bright
Slide 11
Spellbound and rooted to the spot / She gazed, but he too altered not
Slide 12
She saw the warrior wave his blade / And flash it round his awful head
Slide 13
A shriek burst from her frightened lips / The moon rushed into sudden eclipse
Slide 14
Safely she reached her home once more / And breathless entered the friendly door
Slide 15
The statue rider had left his horse / Lay on the ground a headless corse
Slide 16
Soon were the words of love outspoken / The vows exchange, the golden token
Slide 17
But ere the happy day was come / She felt she must her secret tell
Slide 18
'I hurried to the well-known shore / 'Twas near the fated midnight hour
Slide 19
Soon said, soon done; -- and I sat there / As motionless as though I were
Slide 20
The clock struck twelve! I waved my sword / To suit the action to the word
