Slide set: A peep behind the scenes (story: Bamforth & Co., 36 slides, 1880s)

Descriptive data for this set (listed below slide images)
Slide 1
Introduction
Slide 2
The door was opened and a little girl stood before the man
Slide 3
She seized the picture eagerly and held it before her with evident delight
Slide 4
And when she tried to comfort her, her mother only wept the more
Slide 5**
'Do you hear me?' said her father, 'stop crying, at once'
Slide 6**
The poor woman raised herself in bed and arranged her little girl's curly tresses
Slide 7
After this, the play commenced
Slide 8
She fell asleep, her weary head resting on her mother's pillow
Slide 9
Rosalie was glad to leave the town
Slide 10
There was a little cottage near where the caravan was drawn up
Slide 11
Hymn, 'Jesus, I Thy face am seeking'
Slide 12
'Rosalie,' said her mother, 'would you like to hear, &c.'
Slide 13
'Glad to see you so much better, madam'
Slide 14
She could see inside the church
Slide 15
And Rosalie read aloud
Slide 16
It was a very pale, sorrowful face, which the looking glass reflected
Slide 17
'I'm not going to lose a pretty child, like her, from the stage'
Slide 18
A great pine forest stretched on one side
Slide 19
'You mustn't cry for me, darling,' said her mother
Slide 20
Her father lifted her from the bed
Slide 21
She opened the locket and looked at the sweet girlish face inside
Slide 22
Opening her eyes, she saw a girl standing by her bedside
Slide 23
And Rosalie began to read to Betsey Ann
Slide 24
She often found her father in close conversation with the lady
Slide 25
And then she dropped on her knees and prayed earnestly
Slide 26
'Rosalie,' said her stepmother, 'I intend that you shall make yourself useful'
Slide 27
'Into the workhouse you go, to-morrow'
Slide 28
They knelt down together on the attic floor
Slide 29
And seeing a woman stood at the porch, she asked the way to Pendleton
Slide 30
And Rosalie warmed her hands and told the caravan people how thankful she was for the help on the way
Slide 31
With a trembling hand she opened the little iron gate
Slide 32
Rosalie was too full of feeling for any words
Slide 33
Rosalie sat on a stool at her aunt's feet
Slide 34**
May and Rosalie were the best of friends at once
Slide 35
Betsey Ann looked an entirely different girl
Slide 36**
She met the same old man who gave her the picture
