Notes

The 'Mr Merlin' referred to in the Newton catalogue is probably Carl Merlin (1850-1898), though the photographs are said to be from his collection rather than specifically taken by him.

The 1899 Newton catalogue lists slides 1-63; the 1900 Newton supplement lists 31 additional slides numbered 120-150 (the gap in numbering is filled by another set titled Greece, under Newton's telegraphic code 'ML' (Lucerna 3011600). The 1909 catalogue lists 1-63 and 120-178, with the gap still filled by the separately-listed other set.
