Newton & Co., England
in stock of Newton & Co., 1937-1948 (item ref. CSD)
reissue of The Pilgrim's progress (story: Newton & Co., 47 slides, in/before 1909)
see generic title The Pilgrim's progress (generic set title – 38 different versions are known)
The Newton stock reference for this set would make it quite late in their production, probably mid-1930s. However the illustrated slides show a number of different addresses in their Newton labels, from 3 Fleet Street (pre 1912) to 72 Wigmore Street (1910s) and 43 Museum Street (after 1926). This is probably because at least some of these slides have been recycled from the earlier Newton version of the set, their stock reference XM (Lucerna 3004441).
Slides 1-35 illustrate the story in its usual sequence, but 36-60 repeat the story with some episodes not in sequence, and may have been intended as extras for insertion in the first sequence. At least some of the slides of both groups duplicate those in one of Newton's earlier versions of this story, and one or two of the illustrated slides show traces of earlier numbers that relate to the other sets. A few slides have the marking 'RTA' rather than 'CSD', which probably corresponds to R.T. Archibald (the author of the reading), though the precise significance of that marking is not yet known.
