Notes

Box one of a collection of six boxes of lantern slides donated to the Royal Geographical Society. A box of largely photographic lantern slides, including five with hand-colouring.

Notable images in this set include Indian Army regiments of the British Empire and First World War subjects a slide of the Bala Hissar fort (Kabul, Afghanistan); the Lahore fort and Peacock Throne (Pakistan the Golden Temple, The Taj Mahal and other Delhi monuments in India, including the 'Mutiny' or insurgency monument, and images of buildings and views in Madras, Mumbai and Calcutta Additionally, this set contains several reproductions of portraits of individuals associated with the East India Company (Robert Clive). Two slides comprise hand-made text collages reading 'THE END' and 'FREE', respectively. The slide reading 'THE END' overlays a photographic image.

The cardboard Newton & Co. Covent Garden box (with the firm's title printed on the inner lid) consists of mainly commercial slides from Newton and Co., mixed with home-made images. Several slides have circular vignette frames. Many slides bear humorous titles. The remaining boxes in this set contain images of British schools and images of Roman antiquities.
