The images are photographed from illustrations which appeared in several issues of the London news weeklies Illustrated London News and The Graphic in March and April 1876. These reported on a series of expeditions crossing equatorial Africa from east to west in 1873-1875, led by Cameron on behalf of the Royal Geographical Society, following his return to Britain in early April 1876.
