This set was probably added to and amended over a period of years; the slide listing here is from the c.1913 Ivens catalogue and may represent the full length of the set. Earlier catalogues show smaller numbers of slides, and it is also possible that some slides were discontinued and the overall numbering changed.
Slides 1-20 show members of the royal family; 21-89 are politicians and other celebrities, arranged alphabetically by surname. 90-95 are writers and churchmen. 96-114 are army leaders, particularly from the Second Anglo-Boer War. 115-124 are naval and colonial, then 125-146 are another alphabetical sequence mainly of politicians.
In some cases the slide titles changed to reflect changes in aristocratic and other titles. The 1901 York catalogue lists slides 1-6, 8-10 only, with titles reflecting the new titles of the royal family members shown following the death of Queen Victoria.
Edmund Barton, shown in slide 123, was the first Prime Minister (not 'Premier' as listed by York & Son) of Australia from January 1901 to September 1903, and was knighted in July 1902. So that section of the set was probably first produced in 1901 or 1902, though the captions could have been changed in the later listing in the Ivens catalogue. Many thanks to John Hyett for this information.
