“from A. Lang's Red Book of Animal Stories, by kind permission of the publishers, Messrs. Longman & Co. The legend of a Spanish girl who had escapes the the South American Indians, and was treated with every kindness. Later she was sent back to her people an accused of being a traitor. She was condemned to be tied to a tree in the forest so that savage beasts might devour her. During her captivity a puma defended her from the onslaughts of other wild animals, and when her friends came to her rescue they found the faithful animal by her side.”
