“In Italy, on the property of a rich but cruel man, was a wayside spring at which travellers desired to refresh their horses. The owner forbade this. One day an angel, disguised as a beggar, come with his donkey to the spring. He was forbidden to stay and refresh his animal. Becoming once more an angel he punished the man for his hardness, and so taught him, by bitter experience, to care for the needs of others.”
