“A powerful and interesting story on the curse of gambling. Tom Whitworth and Ben Preston are engaged in a general furnishing warehouse. Both are given to betting. Tom is locked up for robbing his employer. Although Ben is shocked at his companion's downfall, he cannot resist the temptation of attending a race and staking almost all his earnings. He wins two pounds and loses half of it at a public house. On reaching home he finds his wife asleep by the fireside. A book (Uncle Tom's Cabin) lies open on her lap. Ben takes it up, reads a few passages, and discovers that he is a bigger slave than any nigger. He is filled with remorse, and there and then seeks salvation.”
