Dissolving and mechanical effects [Riley Brothers]

General description of this series

A group of mechanical and dissolving effect slides listed as a series in Riley Brothers' 1905 catalogue.

The 1905 catalogue lists 83 sets, arranged alphabetically by title and in two groups – one of 'effects [that] can be used in single lanterns, though they are generally more effective in Bi-unials or Tri-unials', and one 'dissolving effects which can only be used in Bi-unials, Tri-unials or with Two Lanterns'.

The sets are numbered between 1 and 269 with many gaps in the sequence and three numbers unknown (illegible in the catalogue copy). This suggests that the series originally contained more sets which were removed for some reason before 1905.
