Short biography

Reverend Smithurst arrived in Rupert's Land in September 1839 after being commissioned by the Church Missionary Society. He was the first missionary in the region to learn Cree. After twelve years of ministry at the Red River Colony, he resigned his post in 1851. He briefly returned to England before emegrating to Elora in 1852.
