His name at birth was William Henry Taunt; he seems to have reversed the order of his first names between the 1861 and 1871 Census.

In the 1891 Census he gave his full occupation as 'Artist in water colors - Photographer - Author - Designer - Lecturer - Lantern Slide Painter - Picture Frame Maker - Gold Blocker & Printer - Publisher - Mount Cutter - Ornamental Card Maker - Entertainer - Gilder'. In 1911 he listed 'Author, Composer, Artist; Photographer, Lantern Slide Maker; Art, colour and book printer; Publisher, Picture Postcard Maker; Entertainer and Lanternist, Christmas Card Maker; Picture Frame Maker'[!]
