David Livingstone requested a lantern from his father-in-law Robert Moffat in 1845. After an unsuccessful attempt to send one by mail, Livingstone received a lantern from his friend Mungo Murray, who joined him for his Lake Ngami expedition in mid-1849. According to Livingstone, his lantern shows were so popular that they became 'the only mode of instruction I was ever pressed to repeat' (Missionary Travels, p 178). The lantern accompanied him on all three of his major expeditions, but he wrote the most detailed descriptions of his lantern shows during his journey from Linyanti in Botswana to Luanda, Angola (1853-1854). Livingstone's lantern is currently on display at the David Livingstone Centre in Blantyre, Scotland.
