Notes

His name at birth was Joseph William Rider, and all archive references until at least 1881 refer to him as such. From his first marriage in 1887 onwards he seems to have preferred to reverse his two first names.

He was married four times: 1887 to Sarah Ann Hart (she died 1888); 1890 to Caroline Iles (she died 1910); 1910 to Nellie Gertrude Buss (he divorced her 1931); and 1932 to Ada Laura Watts, who outlived him.
