“NOW READY, 'A TALE OF A STORY WITHOUT AN END AND OTHER POEMS,' by ROBERT CRAVEN, C.M. (late Chorister in the Leeds Parish Church.) 156 pages. Cloth gilt, 2s. 6d., gilt edges, 2s. 9d. Post free from the Author, Stillington, Easingwold, Yorks.
”Craven was one of the most prolific contributors of reading texts for Bamforth slides, and often appears to have written verses to suit already existing slide sets, some probably imported from Germany. Although his verses are quite lightweight, their tone and content do suggest an educated and literate man.
His identification is based on a newspaper advertisement from 1872 advertising a new book of poems, which gives his address as 'Stillington, Easingwold, Yorkshire'. Although none of his Census records correspond to this village, his youngest daughter Susan Dearnes Craven was born there in 1872.
A previous identification of this person as Robert Martin Craven (1824-1903), a surgeon of Kingston upon Hull, Yorkshire, appears to be incorrect. Many thanks to Lydia Jakobs for the correct identification of this person.
