Notes

The date of takeover of Marshall's business is assumed from Toms' November 1893 OMLJ advert, and also because Ebenezer Marshall is still shown as at 78 Queen Victoria street (along with Toms) in the 1894 electoral roll but not there in 1895 (i.e. it took a year or so for someone to disappear from the roll).

The exact relationship between Luscombe Toms and 'The Slide House' is slightly blurred: in the 1920s Toms seems to have carried on business under his own name (albeit as a limited company) as well as under the trade name 'The Slide House' – both names were listed in the London telephone directory from 1920 to 1937. The Toms company was liquidated in September 1928, although its name continued to appear in the telephone directory until May 1937, after which only 'The Slide House Ltd' was listed.
