The date of foundation refers to the London branch of this business, founded in France in 1849 as L’Association Fraternelle des Ouvriers Lunetiers and also trading under the name Essel (a phonetic rendering of the initials S.L.).
The London branch probably operated mainly as an agency for the main French business, with A. Coiffier referred to as its manager in the 1884 Business Directory of London.
In 1972 the business merged with Silor to form the Essilor company, still trading in 2012 as an optical lens manufacturer.
