“The fourth of the series of Saturday evening free lectures was given in the College Lecture Room on Saturday evening, when Mr F.R. Rowley, Curator of the Museum, lectured on 'Microscopic Life in Ponds.' [short summary of lecture content follows]

The greater part of the lecture consisted, however, of popular descriptions of some of the most beautiful and interesting forms of life revealed by the microscope, and in illustrating these Mr Rowley discarded lantern slides, and exhibited a series of transparent pictures which gave a most vivid idea of the appearance and colours of the originals as seen under the microscope with dark ground illumination. The audience showed by frequent applause how much they appreciated the extreme beauty of these novel and effective illustrations. [...]”

The Western Times (16 December 1907)

“The lecture-hall of the Royal Albert Memorial College was crowded on Saturday evening, on the occasion of a lecture by Mr F.R. Rowley, the Curator of the Museum, entitled 'Microscopic Life in Ponds and Rock Pools.'

[detailed summary of lecture content]

The lecture was illustrated with unique and beautiful pictures, specially prepared. THese were made of coloured transparent representations of various animalculae upon a dark background, which, when strongly illuminated from behind, were exceedingly pretty and instructive, and were loudly applauded. They formed a welcome variation to the ordinary limelight illustrations.

At the conclusion, the Chairman said that he was very glad to hear that the lecture was 'to be continued,' and proposed a vote of thanks to Mr Rowley, which was heartily carried.”
