“The first meeting of the winter was held on November 30th, in the school, and was fairly well attended. Mr. Walter Clarke, the Leeds Police-court Missionary, delivered an admirable address, illustrated by the Lantern, on 'The Mission Work of the CETS'. In forcible language, illustrated largely by facts which had come to his own personal knowledge, the lecturer spoke of the varied aspects, the dark and the bright side, of Temperance work. He ended up with the very urgent appeal to those present, who were not members, to join the Society. During the course of the evening the Chairman (Rev. Hugh Bright) said he had been asked to put before the meeting a petition to the House of Commons in favour of the Sunday Closing of Public-houses, which the committee on the subject, who are working the Nothern Division of Leeds, desired should be adopted. The meeting being unanimouslky in favour of the petition being sent, it was signed by the Chairman on their behalf, and will be forwarded by him to the Member of the Division. We may add that this branch of the CETS was only re-strated last year. The Hon. reasurer is Mr. R. Burn, and the hon sec., Mr. McMaster.”
