“A public tea and entertainment, in connection with the Abbey Branch of this Society took place at the Abbey School-rooms, Spicer Street, on Easter Monday. About 50 adults and 60 juveniles sat down to tea, and after tea adjourned to the boys'school-room. The Archdeacon was to have presided, but in his absence the Rev. G.H.P. Glossop presided. Mr. Mantle commenced the entertainment with the story of 'Dan Dabberton's Dream', illustrated by some good magic lantern views. Great interest was manifested in this part of the programme. Songs were given by Miss Arnold, Mr. F.J. Preece, Mr. Mantle, and the Rev. P. Deedes, and selections on the pianoforte by Miss Kent. The conclding portion of the programme were two magic lantern exhibitions by Mr. Mantle entitled, 'The Lifeboat,' and 'The Legend of St. Swithin.' A verse of the National Anthem terminated an evening of general enjoyment.”
