HINTON, Luther (c.1829-1902) – lecturer
Sunday School Union – organiser
“Senior Scholars' Entertainments, 56 Old Bailey. London - Lecture. Subject: 'London, as it was and as it is,' illustrated with the Sunday School Union Dissolvng Views. Mr. Luther Hinton./On Tuesday evening Mr. Luther Hinton gave a very interesting lecture on 'London, as it was, and as it is.' The lecture hall was crowded, and the lecture was listened to with great attention. It was illustrated with a splendid set of dissolving views, exhibited by one of the triple lanterns specially made for the Sunday School Union. The chief points of interest in and around the city were shown, and the marked contrast of their appearance in the 14th and 15th centuries and the present time was very striking. Among the views were those of the Tower, Traitors' Gate, Custom House, London Bridge, Bank of England, Royal Exchange, Guildhall, General Post Office, St. Paul's Cathedral and Cross, Smithfield, Temple Bar, Temple Church, Somerset House, Village of Charing, Charing Cross Hotel and Station, Westminster Bridge, Lambeth Palace, Houses of Parliament, and Westminster Abbey. As illustrating the customs of bygone days, there were views of the stocks, Titus Oates in the Pillory, Preaching at St. Paul's Cross, Burning in Smithfield, a 'Charlie,' and early English costumes. The lecture was delivered with great vivacity, and was full of humour, while now and again some words of good advice were given to the young folks present. At the close the lecturer was very heartily applauded and cordially thanked. As usual, Mr. Nicols officiated as chairman.”
