“Deptford - On Thursday, 30th December, about sixty children, members of St. John's Freeman Band of Hope, assembled for their annual Christmas treat. The girls had an excellent tea. Toys, &c., were distributed afterwards among them, taken from a Christmas tree. Miss Marchant, the president, then gave a short address, and all left at half past six o'clock. The boys arrived at seven, and were amused by a magic lantern entertainment. They subsequently partook of supper. A friend then addressed a few words to the boys, who were dismissed about nine o'clock, each with a small present. Both entertainments were opened and brought to close by a short prayer, and the children sang hymns in the interval.”
