HOLMES, Captain   (fl. 1890s) – lecturer

Reference
H. Cotton-Smith, ‘The Church's Holy War’ in Church Army gazette

“'Religion trough the window.' Walworth, At. Paul's. - We have now finished our summer's work, and have not only drawn up but already started our winter's programme. In reviewing the work of the past six months, whilst we have not nummerically increased to any great extent, a real, and we hope lasting, effect has been made in the spiritual life of many in this corner of our great and populous parish. Capt. Holmes has worked most assiduously, assisted by a little band of earnest and zealous workers, in conducting regular open-air services. These have been very much appreciated; though unable to attract large crowds on week-nights, the windows of the houses in the streets visited were invariably opened, and the short addresses and hymns were evidently listened to by many who have not cared to shew themselves. On Sunday evennings, when accompanied by the surplieced choir, large and attentive gatherings have been the result. The constant and systematic visiting of Capt. Holmes must, and will eventually, shew its effect. Though the utter indifference to all spiritual matters of the vast majority of people is depressing, yet it is cheering to find here and there someone who has desired to know more of the Gospel of good news, and to live a mor Christ-like life. Our lantern services, 'The Epistle and Gospel illustrated,' which have been well advertised, have so far been very successful. The mission hall on the opening night was well filled. The magnifcent slides, the hearty singing of the hymns shewn on the sheet, and the earnest ond thoughtful address of Capt. Holmes, made a most impressive service which cannot fail to influence those who came. S.P., for Capt. Holmes.”
