“'No uncertain sound.' Cumrew, Carlisle. - The Carlisle No.I C.A. Van, under Capt. Bartle, and his assistant, have just concluded a visit to this parish. A most interesting lantern lecture was given in the schoolroom by the captain on the work of the Army, which was lsitened to with the greatest attention by a numerous audience. Lantern lectures were also delivered - these lectures were more numerously attended than the first, and the religious instruction conveyed in the captain's description was of a highly spiritual character, and from the devout attention given, I fully believe a deeply satisfactory impression must have been made. On each of the remaining week nights during the visit a stirring address was given by the captain, or Mr. Nichol, on the more important topics. I was delighted to observe how the attendance, which, from the first, was exceptionally good, almost daily increased in numbers. These meetings, as well as the lantern lectures, were held in the schoolroom. [...]”
