BENNETT, Captain Herbert (1873-1949) – lecturer
“'In the Carriage Works.' Capt. Bennett came to this parish and stayed a fortnight. He had four assistants and I was delighted with the earnestness and industry of everyone of them, and also with the thoroughly sound Church teachering which I heard them give. Mission Services were held in the Schoolroom, and Lantern Services in the Market Square, which were attended and reverently listened to by hundreds; the attendance increasing very much as the Mission went on. On Sundays a Men's Service was held in the schoolroom, and the Lantern Service in the church after Evensong. Capt. Bennett also addressed the workmen of the L. and N.W. railway carriage works during their dinner hour on several occasions. His earnsetness and directness of speech made a great impression. At a largely attended meeting held after the Mission had left, it was decided to carry on the Sunday Service for men permanently. A very thorough house-to-house visitation f the parish was carried out. I can look back with much thankfulness to the great assistance which the Church Army Mission has rendered to me in my work. W.L. Harnett”
