“TWO GOALS TO THE CAPTAIN Oakley. - The 'Winchester' Diocesan Church Army Van, under the charge of Capt. Cox, visited Oakley, and spent a fortnight in that pretty little village on the chalk, from Sept. 26 to Oct. 10. The Captain was invariably helped by Bro. Fowler, and both, by evident earnestness of purpose, joined to kindliness of manner, soon won their way among the people, and by some capital football palying on their well-earned Saturday holiday, stole into the good graces of the younger men, with very good results. The people of a small well-to-do village in Hampshire, are not easily stirred to think anything is the matter; but the people of Oakley found themselves quite drawn out on this occasion, and attended closely and in considerable numbers, the bright meetings, impressive Lantern Lectures, and solemn Services. The Captain has certainly a pleasant and valuable knack of putting very serious and solemn matters in a very simple and homely way, without in the least sacrificing their solemnity. This is a strong point in rural work. In a small population, 20 Meetings and Services gave an average attendance of 90; and upwards of 80 received Memorial Cards at the close. The Captain gave four addresses to children alone, and though diffident of himself, the children evidently thought he was just the man for them.
