BLACKIE, Captain   (fl. 1890s) – lecturer

“THE CAP FITTED Bootle, Christ Church - On Saturday night, in the Lecture Hall, Waterworks Street, our Captain gave us a Lecture, entitled, 'Ten Nights in a Bar Room,' which was illustrated by Magic Lantern Views. As the pictures of the scenes in the Bar Room were thrown on the sheet, we could not help feeling how terrible is the curse of drink, and pray that men and women who are now under its terrible power may be brought under the power of Jesus. The room was nicely filled, and the Lecture thoroughly enjoyed. One man afterwards said to Captain, 'Well, I have paid a shilling to go to a theatre, and such-like places, but I never enjoyed myself so much as I have to-night, or got anything so substantial.' On Sunday the Captain's subject was, 'The Prodigal Son.' The power of God was felt in the Meeting, and we believe someone will come home to the Father's home through that Meeting. One women said she was sure someone told the Captain about her, as every word he spoke just fitted her; but we know in reality it was God's Holy Spirit sending the message home to her heart. At the close of the address our Captian sang us a Scotch hymn, 'Glory to God, he's come home.' May God grant that some poor wanderer may come home to Jesus. E. H., for Capt. Blackie”
