NEWTON, Captain   (fl. 1890s-1900s) – lecturer

Reference
T. Lothian, Jerome Mercier and Halsall Segar, ‘The Church's Holy War’ in Church Army gazette

“FILLING THE CHURCHES Mickley Square, Stocksfield-on-Tyne. - On Monday night Capt. Newton gave a Lecture in the Mission Hall on the various branches of the Church Army work, illustrated with lantern and slides. There were over 400 people present. Capt. Newton spoke very highly of the work, and of the vast power for good it was becoming throughout our land in all its branches. Everyone was highly satisfied with the evening's entertainment, and we pray that an impression has been made on the minds of some, and will be the means of leading them to accept the Christ which the movement sets forth. Many thanks to those who gave assistance to Capt. Newton. The work is known all over the North District, and has awakened other churches to the dreadful condition of things. Men and women are being brought to conviction of sin all round the district, and in this parish it has created an interest that has been the means of filling all the churches and chapels. God speed the work of the Church Army, for great is the need of a revival of God's work all over the country. J. T. S. B., for Capt. Newton.”
