SHORTHOUSE, Captain   (fl. 1890s) – lecturer

‘The Church's Holy War’ in Church Army gazette

“A NEW FACE ON THE ISLAND Jersey, St. Mark's. - A most enjoyable evening was spent on Tuesday (25th) by the members and friends of the C.A. in Jersey, the occasion being a Welcome Tea to Capt. Shorthouse, who has recently joined this station, and who, by his brightness and sheer hard work has already made himself very popular. About 150 sat down to tea, our Vicar (Rev. A. Leech) among the number. The tables looked very inviting with their snowy linen cloths decorated with plants and flowers and glistening china, and surrounded by smiling faces. After tea a Lantern Entertainment was given, illustrating 'Waif life in London.' Capt. Shorthouse explained the slides, and was able to give anecdotes of what he had himself seen among the poor in the slums. He also thanked those who had so kindly given towards the tea, whereby the poorer people were enabled to obtain a rare treat at a very low price. His kindly remarks were greeted with applause, and the proceedings terminated by singing the Doxology. J. W. H.”
