COLEMAN, Lieutenant (fl. 1890s) – lecturer
“With the hop-pickers: [...] Again we have had an Officer among us, and he has done good work in visiting the different hop-yards with Gazettes and tracts, giving addresses to the grown-up people and children on various occasions, and manipulating the Magic Lantern most effectively at our Lantern Services. As a rule the nights have been very still when these Services have been given, and the pictures, prayers, and hymns on the slides have in consequence come out very distinctly. The stories read and illustrated at the Services have been, 'Charlie Coulson, the Drummer Boy,' Lost in London,' 'Little Jamie,' and 'The Torn Bible.' Scenes from the Crucifixion and from earlier periods of the Saviour's Life have also been given. There have also been on Sundays Services at the various quartersof the hop-pickers, and Children's Services in our schoolroom, both of which have been well attended, especially the latter, when the room has been often quite crammed. About 1,200 Gazettes as well as a large number of tracts have been distributed in the hop-yards, and many Testaments, Gospels, and other books have been given to the children attending the schoolroom Services. Lieut. Coleman, who has been our Missioner this time, is the brother of Capt. Coleman, who was with us the preceding years. He has been very active during his stay with us, and carried away with him our best wishes for his future success.”
