‘The Church's Holy War’ in Church Army gazette

“A large crowd on most nights: The Church Army Mission Van, charge of Capt. Bennett, assisted by Bros. Painter and Bryant, is still amongst us, and the Mission Service in the Girl's Schoolroom every evening is well attended. But the most interest seems to be centered in the Open-air Services on the Market Square after dusk. Whether it is the beautiful Magic Lantern pictures, illustrating the various subjects, or whether it is the earnestness and eloquence of the speakers that draws such a large crowd on most nights it is impossible to say, but there ist very great attention paid to the adresses. Well-known hymns are sung - the word being thrown on the sheet - and the first part of the Church of England Service is used, followed by an address by one of the Missioners. On Saturday evening a most interesting and instructive account of the history and work of the Church Army was given by Capt. Bennett, and was illustrated with pictures of the work and shelters in London, and various incidents of the work of the Vans. There was a very large crowd on Sunday night, when a beautiful service was held. The Van left here for Hanslope, a Farewell Service being held in the Market Square. ”
