“For all the bright gold o' the Indies: On Monday, Feb. 22, there were great rejoicings at the Johnston Institute, the occasion being the first Anniversary of the Mission started last year under the direction of the late Capt. Owen, who has since been called to his rest. At 6.30 about sixty people assembled to tea, when the Curate (Rev. F. W. Cogswell) presided. After tea the Rector arrived and gave the people a very helpful Address, and thanked the workers who had carried on the Mission during the year. At 8 o'clock there was a short Prayer Meeting and general thanksgiving for all the mercies received during the Mission. Then followed, from Lantern Slides supplied by the C.A., 'The Little Hero,' and 'Buy your own Cherries,' the Curate kindly taking the readings. Many a mother's heart warmed to see the little hero praying on the deck in the midst of so much danger, and it taught the children too what prayer can do to soften the hardest heart.”
