“Croydon. St. John the Baptist, Old Parish Church. - On Boxing night, at the Vicar's wish (whose absence through a severe cold was much regretted), a special tea and entertainment was provided for the people of Middle Row. Proceedings commenced at eight o'clock with a mixed entertainment, consisting of a series of magic-lantern slides, and interspered at inervals with songs and recitations. A substantial tea was provided of which one hundred and twenty-two people partook. Tea being over, whilst the men smoked, the tale of 'Gabriel Grubb' was told with much effect, and illustrated by special dissolving views. The entertainment was a complete success, the people being the poorest and roughest in Middle Row. Not a man left the hall until the conclusion of the programme. As a proof of substantial good effected may be mentioned the circumstance that a man gratefully owned the next morning, that the money which would otherwise have been squandered in Christmas dissipation had been laid out in purchasing stock for his trade.”
