“Back the winner: Enthusiasm for Christ and ditto for the Devil was found in sharp conflict on Saturday night in Braintree. A good crowd of all classes had collected around the fountain, Capt. Steele cries, 'Some men will risk the last shilling on a horse. Will you risk your all on Jesus?' A shout from one in the crowd, 'Then you will back the winner.' Satan sent a drunkard along to upset us, but it was a great help to us in bringing a crowd together, for which we thanked him. After this meeting was over we gave them a Magic-Lantern Service, 'The Prodigal Son,' and 'Scenes in the Life of Our Lord Jesus.' About 400 people gathered together. No noise was heard all the time. We closed at 10 o'clock. [...]”
