John Tregenoweth (generic set title – 2 different versions are known)
CARTER, Captain (fl. 1890s-1900s) – lecturer
“Nay John, nay John: Through the generosity of the parishioners of this parish, Capt. Carter, assisted by many friends, arranged a tea on Whit-Tuesday, May 15th, to which a goodly number sat down. After this a very interesting and profitable lecture illustrated by lantern slides was given, entitled 'John Tregenowith; his mark,' by Capt. Carter, many in the large congregation seeing the folly of excessive drinking, will we trust abstain from drunkenness. The Vicar ended with a few earnest remarks, in which he entreated the dear people to imitate 'John' by giving up something that tends to make them sinful, for Jesus' sake. The Benediction brought the lecture to a close.”
